Visitor posting and spam control

I've enabled visitor (anonymous) posting in the forums and in comments. At the same time, I've signed up for a new spam control service. This service analyzes the text and determines if it's spammy. If it thinks it's spam, it has you answer a CAPTCHA question. The idea is that anyone can post, registered or not, and hopefully not get bugged by the CAPTCHA too much while keeping the spammers out. It all sounds good in theory. Smile We'll try it for a while and see how it goes.

I'm hoping by allowing anyone to post in the forums we'll see more activity from people who have something to say but don't want to sign up. I do, though, still encourage everyone who wants to participate to sign up for an account. It's free and will let you have a user profile so we can get to know you better.

One limitation with the software that I use is that it asks for information about you when you leave a comment but not when you make a new topic in the forums. I'm going to look into adding something for that.

If you have an questions/comments/complaints/whatever, let me know. Hopefully this experiment will work out well.

Sigh... I opened up anonymous posting to encourage people to join the conversation, not do test posts. Angry There is a demo site for advforum. Please use that.

Sorry, I guess that came off harsher than I intended. It's just depressing that this site is of more interest to Drupal folks wanting to kick the tires than the local people it was intended for. I don't have any problem if the Drupal folks want to engage in conversation, but using a name like "Testttyq" and posting a content-less post looks like someone just testing it out that will never be back and clutters the forums.

The reason I opened it to anonymous posting was to encourage people to talk without having to bother to register first. I've stumbled across forums before where I had something to say but wasn't interested enough to go through the process of getting an account. I don't want to lose out on a potential conversation so I'm trying to make it as easy as possible to join in.

By the way thanks for the Nice work you have there, I've using your Advance Forum for our website.

I'd like to know how can I integrate the Signature (drupal built-in) in your Advance Forum without seeing the Signature content on the reponse box whenever I need to add comments in the Forum.

Thanks!

@emilywww - Hello. Smile Be careful posting on forums saying you're looking for a boyfriend. I try to keep this place family friendly, but I have no control over who views this site and your information.

@HansCheska - It's not something I've looked into. I use the Signature for Forums module which takes care of that for me.

What's that? The open posting? Not likely unless we have problems from it. As much as I'd like people to sign up and join the community, I know from my own experience that sometimes you just want to say something and not go through all that bother.

Hi:

I am wirting a news article about online shopping sites that are not well known but have excellent value.
What are some of your favorite places to shop online and how would you rate them over:
Amazon
eBay
Overstock

Thanks

@JMattforeverrr - For computer / electronic stuff I like NewEgg. They often have really good deals. You might want to start a new post for this question so more people see it.

I've got another website where we have a thread like this and thought I'd start one here too.
It's a simple word association game where you reply to the previous post and provide one word that is similar to the word in the previous post. Ex: black (original post) / white (next post).
This should be interesting and with all the partisan hacks on this forum, I thought I'd start off with the word:
town

Sounds like an interesting game, though I'm not quite sure I get it, either... At any rate, it would be better to start off a new topic with it. Smile I'm not going to be totally anal about going off topic here but something like that is good to start off a new topic.

Thanks,

Michelle

Ok, this is ironic given the topic, but I'm going to lock this thread. For some reason it keeps attracting random gibberish postings and spam.
